Investigation of nootropic potential of ethanol extract of Elettaria cardamomum Maton fruit (Cardamom): a spice of India

Abstract Background Cognitive impairment mainly affects learning and problem solving abilities of the person. Traditional medicines, due to fewer side effects, more efficacy lesser cost are still choice treatment in India. The main objective present study is explore nootropic potential ethanol extract Elettaria cardamomum Maton fruits. was conducted by using exteroceptive behavioral models like elevated plus maze, passive avoidance apparatus object recognition task at doses 100, 300 500 mg/kg. Results Ethanol E. fruits significantly decreased transfer latency increased step down discrimination index respectively when compared normal control groups. Piracetam diazepam exhibited respective rise fall memory animals. effect plant on total serum cholesterol, acetylcholinesterase malondialdehyde were effective two higher doses. However, it glucose levels insignificantly whereas a significant brain GSH observed with increasing dose extract. Conclusions concludes that may be attributable its anti-oxidant, anti-cholinesterase cholesterol as well lowering potential.
